Banana-Date-Cacao-Pow! Smoothie

Nothing packs a nutritional punch like the combination of organic vegan protein powder with the high potassium duo of bananas and dates. Add raw cacao and you’ve got the party of my favorite post-workout smoothie: the Banana-Date-Cacao-Pow! After getting so many questions about protein supplementation over the years, I’ve taken it upon myself to research many different brands. After trying a broad variety of protein supplements made from whey, soy, egg, hemp, pea, and other sources, the one I found with the best taste and best nutritional bang for the buck is Garden of Life Raw. It is organic, vegan and gluten free and has probiotics and vitamins, as well. I don’t work for the company; I am just a big fan and have been using the product to supplement my diet for the past 3 years. Since I am not a big meat-eater, I find that I struggle to get enough protein in my diet, particularly when I am training for an endurance event.  Up until last week,  I never really had a name for this favorite smoothie, but my friend and fellow dietitian, Lyndsay Riffe, helped me find this fun moniker.  We shared the Banana-Date-Cacao-Pow! with the wonderful campers at Diabetes Training Camp last week and received rave reviews.  It is a fantastic post-workout shake, but can be enjoyed anytime as a balanced delicious snack or light meal replacement. All of the sugar in this recipe comes from the date and banana. If you are concerned about added sugar, you can alter these ingredients, but this recipe provides an optimal carbohydrate to protein ratio for post-workout recovery.

Instructions
  1. Place ingredients in a high powered blender in the order listed. I use a Blendtec but any high-powered blender will work. Blend on high for 30 seconds, or until mixture is smooth. Enjoy immediately.
Notes
This makes a large smoothie, which is enough to share if you are feeling generous. I never have!
